Options for skills development

Individual learning preferences vary, as do peoples’ circumstances. Below are some options to think about when you are considering developmental activities:

  • Training programs such as this one.
  • On-the-job development – ask for a special assignment.
  • Seek coaching from someone you see as competent.
  • Develop a mentor relationship.
  • Read and research relevant publications.
  • Observe others.
  • Plan and initiate opportunities to practise.
  • Ask for temporary assignments, job swaps, etc.
  • Seek out opportunities to present papers/teach/coach others in a skill area. The preparation required may help you think through critical skill aspects and you can seek feedback.
  • Take on further formal study.
  • Seek project work within your department or secondment to other agencies, community groups, etc.
  • Ensure that your staff position descriptions include community engagement skills requirements to ensure future capability.
  • Engage in professional development discussions with other interested public sector managers.
  • Engage in professional development discussions with others.
Use the Skills development plan to address the highest ranked skills/competencies from your Skills development checklist. The outcome from your assessment should integrate with your agency’s performance planning process and/or business plan for your area.
