Structures and processes

Interaction between agencies and communities is mediated through structures and processes. Some are informal, such as personal discussions. Others are more formal, such as advisory committees or community forums. A combination of both is ideal.

Key questions Tips for good management
  • What current arrangements exist for community input?
  • How effective are current processes? How could they be improved?
  • What additional arrangements would be useful?
  • Are there gaps?
  • Research a range of processes and be aware of other experiences.
  • Consider a range of methods.
  • Allow the situation to determine the method of engagement, not the reverse.

Methods need to be chosen that suit the engagement situation, rather than a method you have always used, for example. For more information on selecting an appropriate method, refer to Methods.
